Japanese slang poster

Japanese slang is rarely taught in schools or found in textbooks. As of 2024, we have collected popular slang expressions used by young people across Japan and turned them into a single visual poster.

At first glance, slang may sound like “bad words,” but Japanese slang extends far beyond youth culture or online language. Japanese is a complex language that uses four main writing systems, and today, symbols and alphabets are also increasingly used - creating a unique blend of six different character types.

As a Japanese designer, I find it fascinating how these familiar letters, when scattered and rearranged, begin to lose their meaning and transform into something abstract. For those who cannot read Japanese, these characters might appear as patterns, or even as graffiti - an entirely different visual language.
